UAWA COUNTY COUNCIL

A special meeting, of the Uawa. County Council was held on March 25. Present: lis. E. B. Boland (chairman), J. A. .Moore, J. S. Paterson, and C. E. Smith. Tito chairman said the district nurse had been informed that her appointment was to be terminated. —On tlve motion of tlie chairman, seconded by Cr. Smith, it was resolved that, in view of the good work that was being carried out by the nurse, the Department be asked to reconsider, the decision. .

The.'.matter of county finance was considered, when the manager of the Union Bank waited upon the Council. It- was pointed out. that a. now account would be opened at. the bank for theneounty fund on April 1, -and that the Council would require to keep strictly to limit. Tite chairman stated that it would be necessary to keep a tight hand on the workings of the county, and that if would bo. necessary to discharge all except- the permanent roadmen and those- employed on loan works. ....

A special meeting' of the Council*'was held oir April 1. Present: Crs. E. B. Boland (chairman), 1). H. Hawkins, J. A. Moore, J.,McNeil and Q. E. Smith. Leave of absence was f ranted to Crs. F. Hutchinson and. J. S. Paterson. Tenders received for the erection of the Council Chambers, and engineer's residence were as- follows: H.,(J. Davison £4117, 11. Skect £4555, Archie Kirk £4839, F. Wilkinson £4885. The (chairman stated that all tenders were above the estimates for the work, and thai in view .of the difficult times he was not in favor of going above jthe estimates,, and moved that no tender be accepted as received. It was stated that, in the first estimates no. provision had, been made for conveniences which were now provided in plans on a complete scale. It was thereupon resolved that the lowest tenderer be asked to meet the Council with a, view to giving, a price for the work, Jess .the conveniences, and one small alteration to the residence. The tenderer stated that he would be prepared to carry out the work with these alterations for £4OCO. The chairman then moved that the lowest tender for the work be accepted, with alterations to the plans as set forth, the price to be £4oCO.—The proposition ' was seconded by Cr. Smith and. carried. Consideration was then given to several of the epunty-by-laws. Notice of motion by Cr. Smith was brought forward as follows: "That bylaws referring to septic tanks and sewerage filters, on page <#s. of printed bylaws be amended by omitting' . from clause* thereof all words .after right-of-way,''—The proposition was .seconded by Cr. Moore and carried.

On the motion of. the chairman, seconded by. Cr. Hawkins, it was resolved thai the Council proceed by special order to make a by-law restricting heavy .traffic at certain times, and along certain roads of fho county. .'■'.' < It'was resolved, on the motion'of the chairman, seconded by Cr. McNeil, that permission for the erection of a .■•septic tank on the-property of the Union Bank be granted to Mr H. 0. Davison, builder, of Tolnga,. Bay. . ~, ." •■; " . On the motion, of the chairman, seconded by Cr.' Hawkins, it was' resolved that the Council accept the offer of the Gisborne SlieopfarmersJ Frozen Meat and Mercantile Co.: to giant the use of section E, Mangarara, on condition that the Council pay rales thereon. '.< The clerk was, instructed to;.write to the Commissioner, of Crown Lands, asking the position of the gazetting of section 15, block VI., as a. reserve for.the Council's) use.
