LIGHT RAILWAY LINE.

STATIC; ASSISTANCE SOUGHT

ipep press Association.!

WELLINGTON, last night

The assistance of the Minister of Public Works was sought to-day by a.deputation, consisting of Messrs. Parr and Watts, in respect to the construction of the proposed light railway between To Awamutu, Pirongia, and Kawhia. The deputation asked the Minister if the Government saw fit to authorise the work to allow a railway to be constituted so that a board might be formed. The. Minister stated this evening that he had given no definite reply to the deputation. The position seemed to be that the preliminary committee which took the matter up went ahead with a petition and secured the required number of signatures, while a counter-peti-tion was also circulated. It was obvious that opinion was divided. The deputation had pointed out for him that, in surveying the route, liabilities had been incurred for which certain guarantees had to be given. They asked that ; board should be formed in accordance with the requiremeiite of the Local R.ways Act. They did not ask for the right to put the railway into operation. They left it to the Government to snv whether the lino should be constructed or not. The Minister informed the deputation that he would place the matter before Cabinet.
