GISBORNE'S EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.

LITTLE MONEY TO SPEND

MINI STEP, IN NAPIER

On Wednesday afternoon at Napier. the Hon. C. J." Parr. Minister of Education, who lias been visiting that district, was waited upon by a deputation from the Hawke's Bay Education Boara. Several matters affecting Gisborne woie brought, under the notice of the Minister. DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL AT TE KARAKA. A proposal for the establishment of a District High School ;it 'IV Karaka was introduced bv the secretary of (he Board, Mr. W. I- Dunn. He stated that there were 38 children requiring secondary education in the district, whilst only six of them were receiving it bv boarding at the Gisborne High School. The others could not afford that, and the train arrangements were not suitable for their becoming any pupils. The main dillictilty for ;; school was the question of accommodation. Two hulls had been considered, but were unsuitable, and in the opinion of tn<> Board the best way to get over the difficulty was the erection of a portable and temporary building, which be stated in reply to the Minister, was estimated to cost £SOO. Mr. Dunn hoped the Minister would deal with the application immediately, and not wait for the recommendation of the Council of Education. Later, in reply to the above request, the Minister stated that he would place the matter before Cabinet. The Prime Minister recently had been there, and' so might be able to give some assistance. If there were 38 bona fide applicants, then he. would undertake that it was a ease the Government must sooner or later meet. NEW SCHOOL AT AWAPUNI. Mr. G. F. Roach (chairman of the Board), brought forward an application for a proposed new school at Awapuni, Gisborne. Mr. Roach stated that the accommodation at the Gisborne schools was taxed, and in the opinion of the Board it would be better to build a new school at, Awapuni rather than enlarge these Gisborne schools. The suggested accommodation was for 150 pupils, and as the position was serious in Gisborne he urged the Minister to give the- application his favorable consideration. In reply the Minister stated that ho would go' into the question of a school at Awapuni with his Department when he. had information as regards the state of the other Gisborne schools.
