"AN UTTER SHAM."
FAILURE OF MALCONTENTS
MOVE. lElec Tel Copyright nntted Press Assni lAustralian and N.Z. Oacle Association.) LONDON. April 5. In the House of Commons Mr. Joynson Hicks moved the following motion: "That the lack of a definite coherent principle in the policy of the Coalition Government can only be remedied by a Ministry of men united in political principle." A lively debate followed, the malcontents urging a return to party politics, and accusing the Government of incompetence and muddling. Mr. Chamberlain, in replying, was received with prolonged cheers. He said Mr. Joynson Hicks and his friends were laying 'down a sort of new Atlianasiau creed, outside which no salvation was obtainable. They stood for perfect unity of thought in the counsels of the nation. There must be no corrupt co-operation, not even a chance meeting in the division lobby. (Laughter.) Mr. Chamberlain added that the motion was an utter sham. It was rejected hv 288 votes to 95. (Received April 7, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, April 6. The Joynson-Hicks' motion against the Government last night was generally regarded as a fiasco. An analysis of the voting reveals the fact that only thirty-live Diehard Conservatives voted for it. The rest of the minority comprised twenty Wee Frees and forty Labor members.
