HORSE-RACING.
' GOVERNOR’S PRAISE OF SPORT. LOVE FOR. MILD GAMBLE. ADELAIDE, Feb. 17. —Sir Archibald Weigall, Governor of South Australia, was present at a lnncheon given to the members of Tattersall’s Club to a visiting team of cricketers to-day. The Governor, in reply to the toast of his health, alluded to the friendships made on the turf. “I know there are certain people,” said the Governor, ‘‘who say that racing does an awful Jot- of harm. No doubt these are weak-minded people. But if wo are always going to pander jo the weak-minded' we shall simply develop into a race of gammy people. In Australian human nature there are two main factors. One is the extreme love of 4 horse, and the other is,the extreme love of a- gamble. I do not know that there is any harm in either, as long as you do dot gamble more than you can afford to lose. You might come to grief through keeping horses that were too slow and society that was too fast. That, how-ever,-is no reason why one should not support racing. There is attached to ralcing the shadowy and seamy side, but for th» special purpose of keeping racing clean and l organised upon definitely regulated! lines, Australian clubs have been established.” He had never known heartier sportsmen or. cfteerier crowds than the Australians.
