FARMERS' UNION.

The following additional business was transacted at the meeting on Saturday afternoon :

Mr. D. Girling, of the Suffolk Sheep Society of England, advised that lie would he pleased to visit the district during February.—The secretary stated that Air. Girling was a great breeder of Suffolk sheep in England.

Air. Field stated that lie thought the Government should be very careful on account of the foot and mouth disease in admitting animals to New Zealand. If the Suffolk was a better sheep than the. Southdown, lie would be worth introducing Mr. W. J. Poison is making arrangements to he in Gisborne on Wednesday, February 15. He desires that a. meeting be arranged on the night of the 15th. If it is thought advisable he will he available for another meeting on the 16th. Air. Poison intends to visit Waii’oa -after visiting Gisborne. —The secretary reported that he had written to Air. Poison, stating that on account of the steamer, it might bo impossible to hold the meeting on the Wednesday, and that it would ho advisable to hold the meeting on the afternoon of the 16th.—The opinion of the meeting was that there should be a large attendance.—Tlie chairman stated that Air. Poison was very enthusiastic and a very pleasing speaker.—lt was decided - that the meeting lie held in the Savage Club room on Thursday afternoon.

The Gisborne Chamber of Commerce solicited the support of the Union to a resolution (already published) expressing disappointment and protesting firmly against the decision of the Alinister of Public Works to close down construction work on the Gisborne-Napier section of the East Coast railway. —The chairman stated that he thought trie Chamber had missed another link, Hint of the overland route to Rotorua, via Motu and Opotiki. He wanted to know if the executive would he willing to urge the replacing of amounts that were on the estimates last year, and are not there this year, for the Oloko hill and the building of two further bridges in the Afotu-Opotiki road. The settlers in the vicinity of the Otoko hill did not want to be saddled with the expense of having something done on the hill. They had the railway.—Air Field moved that the Chamber support the action of the Waikohu County Council in pressing that the hill road be improved. It was also decided to embody in the resolution that tlie Chamber’s request be supported.
