BREACH OF PROMISE.
AN UNDEFENDED CASE. JURY AWARDS £250 DAMAGES. A. breach of promise case that was not lefended was heard in tho Supreme ",'ourt, Wellington, before his Honor Mr. Justice Reed and a common jury. The ilaintiff was Lillie Campbell, a resident if Ranfurly Terrace, Wellington, and the lefendant a stationer and compositor, of l'e Kufti, King Country, named George Henry Bruce Rogers. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for the plaintiff. The facts of the action were admitted. The lefendant bad on his own admission promised to marry the plaintiff, who now •laimed as damages'£7oo. William Campbell, father of the plain;iff, gave evidence that Rogers had visited his-house and asked bis consent ro the marriage. So far as witness knew, at that time Rogers was a com!ositor employed on wages. In a letter ho defendant bad offered to pay £250, -pread over a period of five years. That was not acceptable to witness's daughter, who had spent a great deal on her trousseau. Addressing the jury. Mr. O'Leary emphasised that it merely had to assess what damages the girl should be i warded. His Honor, in summing up, reiterated hat point, and expressed the opinion hat the claim had been completely »roved thai there had been made, -a iromise to marry. He advised the ury, for the sake of the plaintiff not to ind heavy damages that the defendant would find it impossible to meet. "Doubtless she has lost other chances," ;aid the Judge, "and she should be room ponsed."
