ROUGH ON RATS.
40,000 CAUGHT IN SYDNEY.
Since the introduction of plague to Sydney on September 23 last year, 20,459 rats have been destroyed in the city of Sydney, as the result of tho of tho permanent and temporary rat-catchers and the volunteers earning Gd'per head per rat (states the Sydney Morning Herald). In addition 13,754 rats have been destroyed in the suburban areas, making a total of 39,213 for the whole of Sydney.
A complete house-to-house inspection has been made of the infected area; 2200 notices have been served and
complied with; 212 prosecutions have been taken; .173 people have been convicted for having uncovered garbage receptacles; and 20 for dirty premises. In addition, the Harbor Commissioners, the Railway Commissioners, the G.P.O. authorities, the Licensed Victuallers' Association, the Restaurant and Cafe Fmployers' Union, nn(f the various trades unions have been circularised, and their co-operation invited and obtained in the measures recommended for combating the outbreak.
These facts are embodied in a reoort by the City Health Officer (Dr. .1. S. Purdy) to the Town Clerk.
