WAIROA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) It is always as well not to prophesy unless you know. Tho present summer was to be a record drought; and many people made frantic efforts to have plenty of tanks to cope with the expected water shortage. But lo! We are experiencing tho wettest summer for two decades! Tho metalled roads of the district have been well washed by tho recent rains, and are drying up again except in spots where small slips came down. The clay roads, however, are very boggy in places. A Tongan lad was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon, suffering from a fractured leg, the result of a plank falling on him at the North Clyde wharf, where he had been engaged unloading the War Lord. At the school committee meeting the question was brought up as to the advisability of trying to stop a vendor of ice creams from taking up a position at the public school gates, thereby tempting tho children to spend in this luxury money given them for lunches. .Members did not see there was anything thoy could do in the matter, but no one suggested that a good remedy would be to give their children their lunches instead of money to buy same. A small school of cookery at the primary department might also help to surmount this difficulty.

Tho Wairoa Farmers' Union is promised a visit during the month from Mr Poison, Dominion president. Several important subjects are set down for disriussion, including tho proposal to form a separate district with branches at various localities. If only there is a little vim and enthusiasm thrown into the proposal muob good should result therefrom.

When the Wairoa District High School (primary department)' buildings were recently remodelled and enlarged it was hoped by the visiting Minister, the Hon. Air Parr, that they would suffice for many years. The local school committee had their doubts about this, and these doubts have now been verified. Serious overcrowding is now reported, the total attendance in both departments being 480. The juvenile population of the Wairoa district is advancing rapidly.
