MEAT AND WOOL.
BRIGHTER PROSPECTS.
THE MARKETS REVIEWED
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn i (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Feb. 8. Jn an interview with the Australian and New Zealand Press Association, Mr J. A. M. Elder, after seven weeks’ close investigation of tlio meat position, said he considered the outlook for mutton and lamb brighter than during 1921. The consumption of frozen meat was verv good. Trade was starting with fair quantities in towns where hitherto ell attempts to establish frozen meat shops have failed. The stocks of mutton and lamb, which six months ago were enormous, were now less than normal. Beef, especially stale, which belonged to the British Government, had considerably diminished, but there, is sull a largo quantity thereof on hand. Scuth American shippers continue the ‘beggar my neighbor” policy, pouring beef ir.to this market in quantities larger than is absorbable. They have lost heavily and still are losing,, yet they continue their insane competitive policy. Mr Eider said he could not speak optimistically regarding beef. Argentina can supply much larger quantities than :s new arriving, while no fresh Australian leef is on the market. So the prospects for the coming season are unfavorable. The advance 1 in wool was of gaeat importance to those breeding crossbred sheep and lambs, which are better suited for export than merino. Ihere is likely in the near future to re a still greater adjustment of the extreme difference in values of merino and eiossbred wools. Reciprocity was spoken of during the war as imperative, and the protection of the British meat trade as an urgent vital matter. . One does not hear these sentiments expressed to day. The matter of reciprocity will a-.ain be brought under the notice of the British Government.
