- Michael Coghlan, a prominent member of the Ooogee Life Saving*Club, was killed by a shark while swimming in the surf.

Coghlan's death was witnessed by a crowd assembled to watch the surf carnival; .T. Chalmers, a returned soldier, swam to the rescue while tiro shark was still attacking, and got Coghlan free. JThe champion, Bcaurcpaire, came to his assistance, and brought the injured man ashore, whero 110 succumbed to frightful wounds. The carnival was abandoned.
