The statistician’s figures for New South Wales and Victoria reveal the size of the average family at less than two children, while thousands are childless. BRISBANE, October 5. Mr. Watson, manager of the Chillagoe Ltd., giving evidence at the enquiry into the Mount Mulligan colliery disaster, said that he had heard a loud report, and saw smoke issuing from- the main tunnel entrance on the morning of the disaster. • This was followed by another explosion. A heavy volume of after-damp prevented immediate entrance into the tunnel. When it retreated he went into the pit and found Evans’ body one hundred yards along the tunnel, smothered in dust. O’Grady was found a little further on. Evans was insensible, but recovered consciousness, and tried to’ explain where the entombed men were. The enquiry was adjourned.
