BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho Borough Council met last even- i ing. Present: The Mayor (Air. G. Wildish). and Crs. H. H. DeCosta, W. A. Bowie. F. R. Ball, F. Gray, C. E. Bickford, 1). W. Coleman, Thos. Todd, and R. Robertson. The State Advances Office wrote reiquesting that the. Council should pass a resolution permanently appropriating and pledging the special rate already made for the purpose of securing the payment of the instalments on the amount of £IO.OOO proposed to bo borrowed from the State Advances Office for a period of 36j years. —It was decided to accede to the request.—“ What will we have to do after that, 1 wonder?” said C’r. Coleman. The manager of (he A.M.P. Society informed the. Council that, the matter of the Council’s application for a loan of £16,700 on a term of 10 years, 7 per cent, interest, was favorably recommended for the consideration of the head office in Sydney, subject to the. full terms of the application being satisfactory.— Received. The Motuhora Stone Quarries Company asked whether the Council would' take 150yds. of stone in order lo allow the company to oblige the Waikohu ( utility Council with 50yds. of small metal for eoncrele culverts.—The Mayor said the engineer Mas prepared to take the 150yds.—The Council decided lo purchase the stone. The M.mgapapa Town Board wrote complainin'-’ about the collection of licenses, and asked to he heard on the mat ter. There seemed to be some misunderstanding about the matter. —The Town Clerk was instructed to reply staling the exact position. The officer in charge of the local Valuation Department addressed a letter to (he. Council on the matter of the payment of rates by tenants of business premises. Ou-ing to the trouble that had recently occurred, mlicu Ihe tenants of a building were sent rate demands at the instigation of the owner, it would he advisable in future to insist on forms being used. By that means the signature of the tenant Mould be held as authority for any alteration made in the rolls. The department enclosed severa 1 forms to he used. —The Mayor thought the Valuation Dennrtment’s suggestion should be given effect to. It was a step in tho right direction.—C’r. Ball said the owner of the property should hr responsible.—On the motion of the Mayoi it was decided to adopt the Valuation Denartment’s recommendation. The Bank of New Zealand forwarded a statement of interest paid from Juh 1 to 25, amounting to £2159. and Government (ax £161.---The letter was re reived.

The Borough Engineer (Mr. J. A. McDonald), in the course of his report referred to the works in progress. Im poundings for the month of July: ITorse f 34. Cattle 19. Traffic: Thirty-one applicants have been given licenses to drive for hire Two motor lorries, five public carts, anc nine private carts -M-ere registered dur nig (lie past fortnight.. A further meeting was held on Mon day, July 8, at 2 p.ni., the Mayor and Crs. Ball, Bowjc, and Todd being pre sent. Your committee went into the question of tho negotiations regarding raising tho loans, and would suggest that the- Council give the Mayor author ity to finally arrange matters in Wellington on behalf of the Council.
