BOROUGH VALUATIONS.
INCREASE OF THE RATES
The matter .of the Borough rates and valuations was briefly discussed at the Borough Council meeting held last night. Cr. Colenytn stated that at the last meeting, when the rate was struck, lie was' told that the rate- was at 12£ per cent, lie was afraid to walk, down the street lest ail irate ratepayer would hail him up and complain about the rates. Some said that they -had been rated at TOO per cent., and 200 per cent, over last, year. If that was so and the increase was 121 per cent., then somebody was getting oil’ lightly. The Mayor stated that in several eases the rates had been reduced, and ho gave instances. Cr. Coleman: 1 know my residence and my simp were highly rated this time. The Town Clerk: Yes, Gladstone road got it pretty hot. 1
.Cr. Ball: At the public meeting called to protest against Hie high valuations i said then, and 1 still say, that properties were not over valued. Cr. Coleman: Guile right. Cr. Ball : l’eople should thank their lucky stars that, before they had not been rated as they should. They were rated 100 low, and now they are paying only what is a fair tiling. The north side of Gladstone road previously was rated two-thirds in proportion to the south side, and now the rates on the south side have increased. ,In ,Stoul street, in most eases. Hie rates have not increased. The west, end, Te Hapara, had been rated too low in the past-. Valuations are- on a fair rale, now, and are an evening up of the borough.
