LICENSE REFUSED.
THE MAKETU CASE.
(Per Press Association.) TAURANGA, last night.
An application was made at the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee today by Mr E. Prentis for an accommodation license for a hotel at Maketu. This was a license allowed to lapse last year by non-payment of the license fee after being granted to enable an application to be made for a license at Matamata. The application, was then refused and the case led to legislation last session preventing attempts being made in this way to transfer a license. the application for a re-granting at Maketu was opposed by the New Zealand Alliance and by the police on the ground of the unsatisfactory state of the building and the demoralising effect on the natives; also that the total adult, population of the settlement was under one hundred. Mr Hampson, Rotorua, appearing for the applicant, urged the issue, on the grounds of the popularity of Maketu as a seaside resort and that the native population has also entirely disappeared. The owners also undertake to effect substantial repairs. q'l.p committee, after a re*Lament of one ho”r, decided that it. was impossible to grant a license for such premises.
