CHARGES OF EMBEZZLEMENT,

(Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day

A clerk in the Wellington Official Assignee’s office, named Frank C. Emery, aged 28, has just been committed for sentence at the Supreme Court, be having pleaded guilty to stealing fom sums of money from the department, totalling £BB 11s 3d. The Official Assignee said that accused had beei employed by his department between November 9 and December 30, 1920, and at other periods. During that time la had been entrusted with the colleclioi of money in respect to various estates Receipt hooks wore produced, showing that there was a discrepancy between the amount received and that banked to the extent of £BB Its 3d. Accusec had been appointed to carry on the duties of Official Assignee during the absence of witness. For these service: he had received £4 per week. Yesterday another, public, servant Daniel Erol Sutherland, a clerk in the employ of the Defence Department (vocational training), was charged in the Magistrate’s Court that on or about the 3rd of April, and on divers dates be tween the sth of April and the 18t)i of May, he did steal sums totalling £lO5 13s 6d, the. property of the Nev Zealand Government. A remand unti' Wednesday was granted on the application of Chief-Detective Ward, am bail was fixed at £IOO.
