ALLEGED BOOKMAKING.
WHELAN NOT GUILTY,
(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night
At the Supreme Court, William Whelan was charged that he carried on the business of a bookmaker.
Mr Donnelly prosecuted, and Mr Gresson Thomas appeared for accused. Evidence of the making of bets by letter with the accused was given by Charles Carlson, bushman, Knitiki, and Detective McLeod (Gisborne). Several other witnesses called by the Crown claimed privilege. The jury, after a. retirement of 5G minutes, returned a unanimous verdict of not. guilty anti accused was discharged.
