At tlic eml of the year the nuinbci' of workpeople- registered. at Employment Exchanges was, in round figures, 748,000, made up as follows: Men, £05,000; women, 184,000; toys, 28,000: girls, 31,000. ; ' In the previous week the total was 662,000, but this number was'swollen by J people who. lost work by a prolonged ■ holiday at Christmas, when many works; closed* for'a longer period; than usual. ] It is "clear, therefore', that uiiemploy- j inent has increased by ; nearly 100,000 since L'hi'fctnias. j These! ligures only represent , work-] people who have actually' registered at ! I Employment Exchanges, and they are merely an' index of the prevailing, in- ■ tlustrial. depression.
