THE MEAT MARKET.
The London meat- position is thus summarised by the High Commissioner: — “Chilled beef in large supply selling at to Is per lb hinds, and 8d per lb fores. Also . large supply of '.'South American frozen beef selling at 9d per lb binds, and 6d per -lb lores. Result is Now" Zealand- beef not being placed on the market and is accumulating. Frozen mutton also neglected .owing to the large supply of beef, available. New Zealand lamb in good demand. Last week about 70;(X10 carcases from America were marketed and commanded maximum price of Is Id per lb. It is reported that sale of New Zealand lamb from America has been made at Is 0 d per lb c.i.f. for delivery March. Small quantity of New Zealand mutton from America on* the market selling, at 8d per lb, mixed parcels, showing signs of -forage. Home killed, prices maintained, beef Is sd, mutton Is 9d, lamb 2s Id per lb." The High Commissioner’s cable indiates, says the Post, the diversion of New r Zealand frozen meat from Ameri< a to London to compete with the current season’s produce from the Doniinion. The shipment of” this has been great ly retarded by shortage of, tonnage and to a certain extent by the holding up of the loading of steamers glreadv in the “meat ports.” It is estimated that there will. he in New Zealand stores by the 30th April 5,000,000 sixty-pound freight carcases of meat, for which no shipping space is*in sight-/ - Unless shipping freights and other charges are moderated, it is believed that nufeh meat at -present prices will not pay to export, aU-all, but will ■Wive to be down. —-Post-. 1 •
