Gunson, who has held a lengthy term as Mayor, and who had decided to retire, has consented to stand again at the earnest request of’leading citizens. AUCKLAND, this day. As the outcome of tho tramway strike some months ago the Inspector of Awards began an action to-day, claiming a penalty of from the Auckland Tramways Union for allegedly instigating-, aiding, or an unlawful strike. The case is proceeding. WELLINGTON, this day. In connection with allegations made last session by Mr. 11. E. Holland that meat unfit for human consumption had been exported from New Zealand, it is understood that arrangements are being made for tho appointment of a commission of inquiry under the presidency of •Sir Thomas Mackenzie. The allegations j were officially denied at the time, though a certain amount of deterioration in some cases, owing to prolonged storage, was admitted. j NELSON, this day. I George William Bulford, who was run over by a train at the Port, Nelson, died in hospital. It appears that deceased and two companions were reading a paper on tho wharf, the train backing into them. One was thrown clear and the other, G. E. Scott, had tho presence of mind to lie still between the rails while part of the train passed over him uninjured. Deceased wjis thrown across the rails.
