TOWN EDITION.
Tokomani Bay;—Sailed at 2.45 p.m., Mara-rou, for Gisborne. London ollice advises that a mail for New Zealand was dispatched on February .11, per s.s. Mahana, via Panama. The latest report from Mr. McDonald, Messrs W. D. Lysnar’s and J. Clark's oil-boring expert at- Waitangi, states that the bore was down 110 feet last Saturday. They were then boring (through hard limestone. Mr Thomas Jones, of Grand road, ■ Ormond, was admitted to the Cook } Hospital this afternoon, suffering fro ns [‘a fractured skull. His injuries were caused through a beam falling on his head. He was not unconscious.. ■ This morning the Mayor (Mr Geo. Wildish) received a £5 note from Mr J. 1 Gilmo'ir, proprietor of the Whangara hotel, towards the funds of the Children's Creche. Some days ago Mr Gilmour found the note on the hotel premises, hut despite his advertising that fact an owner was not forthcoming, so lie has forwarded the amount to a deserving cause. It is reported that Mr. William Gray, an ex-Chief Inspector of the Wanganui education Board, and at present principal of the Presbyterian Girls’ College in Melbourne, is the most likely expert ,to secure the post of Director of Education for New Zealand. Mr. Gray was head of tho Teachers’ ’Training College in Wellington when he received the Melbourne appointment. t To-morrow afternoon, on both the Gisborne and Kabutia Howling Club’s greens, (ho second inter-dub match of (he season between the above-mentioned chibs will take place, nine rinks representing each dub on both Thursday and Saturday, ’t he last contest proved a. very close thing, victory going to the Gisborne Club by only two points. Play starts at- 2 o'clock, five games being played on the Kcfhulia green, and four on the Gisborno
green. During Air. Brickell’s remarks at the honey producers’ meeting at Invercargill, he said so far as the 1920 honey was concerned, the directors, realising something of the position at Home last year and feeling that everything was not tin order, sent only a few cases to their selling agents, practically the whole crop being marketed in New Zealand, United ■States, and Canada. It was fortunate tltey had not sent the honey to Britain through the ordinary channels, as by finding other markets and doing the business practically on a cash basis they were probably several thousand pounds to the good. As. a sequel to the winning of the Hawke Cup by the Wairarapa repreI sentative eleven from the Poverty Bay i representatives yesterday, .Mr. H. E. .Maude, president of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, in presenting the Cup to the. manager of the visiting i team, congratulated them on their success. Although reluctant, to part with ■ t*lie Cup he said he could assure them m that the local team realised that the ■ better side had proved victorious. '1 here i had been a little satisfaction in losing
to sue]i ;i team of thorough sports, as the game had been played in the true sporting spirit. He wished Wairarapa tiie best of luck, and remarked that ! Poverty Bay would try their hardest to regain the coveted trophy next 1 season. Mr. Wilson, the manager of ■ the Wairarapa team, in accepting the I Cup from Mr. Maude, said it was a I source of great gratification for them ito return with the ‘‘spoil.” It had 'been ■; a good game, and bo trusted that i another good contest would result at a meeting of the same two teams next ! season. The members of the Wairarapa team leave by the Mararoa to-night.
