THE FERRY SERVICE
ALLEGED CAUSE OF DELAY. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A correspondent writes to the Press this morning as follows: On Saturday morning, the Wahine arrived at Lyttelton at 10.30, about 3J, hours late, the reason given for the tardy passage being the inferior quality of the coal. Why is it the truth cannot be told? lam credibly informed that the coal burned by the Wahine' on the pasage was good, rather better than the average, and that the delay in arrival was wholly due to the incapacity of a number of her firemen. I am credibly informed when the Wahine left Wellington wharf the incapacity of a number of her firemen was such that the steam pressure was barely one-third of the normal pressure, and it was maintained in part by the personal exertions of several of the engineers. I believe the official log of' the Wahine contains ample corroboration of my statements, but the-logging of these men is not sufficient. Something should he done to bring them to a sense of their responsibility.—Herald Special.
