DE VALERA MYSTERY.

SINN FEIN LEADER SAID TQ 811 IN IRELAND. LONDON, December 31. A sensation was caused in Dublin by the announcement that De Valera had evaded the military and had landed in Ireland. His whereabouts is unknown, but according to American reports ho is in Ireland. It is believed that several house-to-house searches were made last week in Dublin in the hope of arresting De Valera. .NEW YORK. Dec. 31. Harry Boland. De Valera’s secretary, announces that De Valera has landed in Ireland. The announcement of ,De Valera's arrival in , Ireland does not mention how the Sinn Fein chief journeyed. He did not apply for a passport, though he crossed’ with a liner's crew. De Valera disappeared three weeks ago. His secretary emphatically denied that he had returned to Ireland, stating merely that he was seeking rest. His prolonged absence, however, caused several Irish organisations to inquire ■what had become of two or three million dollars De Valera had raised in the United States by bond subscriptions during his year’s stay. The secretary insists that secrecy is necessary to avoid Do Valera’s apprehension by the British, but in view of-hints from London that he would. be unmolested it is thought ho has returned to enter negotiations with the British Government. —A: and N.Z.C.A. The, police and’ military at Lostowe], (Kerry) used a number of civilians as hostages while raiding the district. ■ A remarkable scene took place at Carrick-on-Shannon, on New Year’s Eve. The local band headed a torchlight procession, which halted m the square, when the East Yorkshires, who are popular with a majority of the residents, joined hands with the civilians and danced to the music of the band—A. and N.Z.C.A.

MILITARY REPRISALS. (Received January 3, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, January 2.

The. following was issued to-day by the military authorities of Cork, as the result of an ambush of police at Midletou, and near Glebehouse: The military (Government decided that seven houses in the vicinity of the outrages should he destroyed as the inhabitants were bound to have known of the ambush and attack on military parties. Seven houses in Midlelon, Ballyadam, and Knockgrutten were destroyed between 3 and 6 on the afternoon .of January Ist. Notice was handed to each occupier why the house was destroyed. Each resident was given ail hour to remove valuables, but not furniture, and the house was then destroyed. _ Nothing apart from the house and furniture was destroyed.—A. and N.Z.C.A. (Received January 3, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 2. As 'a sequel to the Middleton ambush the military and police raided the town la S t night, burning* a garage and engineering works, and damaging several shops and houses. The military raided Cork workhouse, arresting a number of Irish Volunteers. The Irish Vigilance Society announces that' De Valera presided at a meeting of Dail Erain, but liis influence is waning and his resignation is possible. Several attacks were made on police patrols at Ballybay. Constable Malone was killed and three constables wound* ed. One attacker was killed.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
