CHRISTCHURCH, this day. * In the race for the !New Zealand Derby, Winter Wind, Gasbag, and Royal Mat* showed out at the start, with Right and Left, Delight, and Demand in the rear:On leaving the straight Winter Wind and Royal Mac went on three lengths clear of Gasbag and Vespucci, after whom came Humbug, Duo, Right and Left, Demand, and Delight. Turning into the back straight Winter Wind dropped back suddenly, Duo joining • Royal Mac in the lead, with Vespucci and Gasbag next, followed by Winter Wind and Demand. There was no further change as they.^an along the back and round the top "turn; Duo headed Royal Mae as' they racerf"for the -straight, where Gasbag audi Vespucci were still just clear of Winter Wind, with Delight moving up. When fairly in Jhufor home; Royal Mac retired; leaving' Duo out in front, and, holding his place .comfortably, he won by a length from Gasbag, who was nearly a length in front of Vespucci, while a length further back .Delight -.just .'got "up. to -beat Winter Wind. Thou came Demand, Right and left, and Humbug, with Royal. Mac last.. Time, 2.36.— Herald Special.
