Thomson was charged that as master of the steamer Kahu, when the ship's hull received material damage m Wi*,ihou Bay on March 22. he failed to report the same to the Marine Department. Captain Fleming stated that the vessel was overhauled at Napier. 1 ' and was heing brought to Auckland for delivery to Munro Bros., ' who had bought her from the Richardson Company. Wiien the new owners took charge a dent m the hull was discovered. No doubt the matter was not reported for fear that it might affect the sale of the vessel. Had the vessel not been put on the slip the new master might have been blamed for rhc damage. The defence was that the side of the vessel was severely scraped hy driftwood, causing no material damage. The matter was not considered worth notice. Mr. Poynton, S.M., said that m view of a civil action I for 'damages it did not appear serious. i He would not make the penalty a heavy ! one. Defendant was fined 40s and costs 7s. I qHRISTCHURCH, this day. The unloading of .the Kisomaru has ! been resumed, the men agreeing to. handle Jhe cargo m bulk, provided platforms .were placed over the railway trucks receiving the phosphate. The bagged portion of the cargo is at present being handled.-
