Club list: Pre- ' viously acknowledged, £1629 18s- 6d; E. . H. tawford £1, H.. E. bodd £3 3s, C. H- i Seymour £1Q; total £1643 is..6d. Secre* i tary's list: Previously acknowledged, £1666 \ is 6d; Nasmith. and Son £2 2s, Bignell and ■ Holmes £2, Mrs. Chas., Gray £5,-Mris. W. * Clayton £3; total; £1678 .3s 6d. Grand ] total, £3321 ss. Of this amount £2591 has. been received, and those wlio have-noi • yet forwarded. their donations are respect- ■• fully requested to do so as> early as posi i sible. About six weeks ago over 2000 circulars were issued 1 to all telephone sub- i scribers and sheepfarmers who had not - theh subscribed, and the number of , -replies received to .date is under 50, the' enclosures, totalling. JE26O. a somewhat dis- ' appoin ting-. ; result. JDuring-. the next weekor so a sum of about, £lso, ooo will be distributed m the district as "surplus wool ' profits." May one be permitted to suggest; to those sheepfarmers who have not yet subscribed- that these profits would never have been jorthepming" • had •it not been for the sacrifice of the lads Miosc memory it is proposed to perpetuate, -and that therefore they can surely spare* a moderate proportion Qf thfeir profits towards assisting,, such a worthy cause? One might almost venture to hint that others who liave already sent m "comparatively small amounts; mig.it .possibly, m view of such a /'windfall," sep their way : to supplement their donations. During the war the people of Poverty Bay were second to 'none m their cfrorts and generosity m. all, matters connected with the war, but th<*ir response. to thfs appeal, up to the present, leaves ' them far behind^ any other dis.tici m,. the dominion; One can only hope that ihey will not rest content to remain m this unenviable position.—l am, *tc.,, J. B. KELLS, ' Hon. Sec, War Memorial Fund. HALP-HOtIDAY. (To the, Editor of the Herald.) Sir,— T%. report y of ! pl'oceed.ings .at shopkeepers', meeting .is inclined, to mis-: lead. It^ would Appear, therefrom as if the "unanimous 1 * desire of. Gisborne shopkeepers was to uphold Thursday, half-holiday as against Saturday. It would be just as easy for those.'shopkeepers who favor the Saturday to. hold a similar meeting and truthfully report a "unanimous" decision of shopkeepers m favor of Saturday, and therefore unbiassed people; including the member for the district, must draw their own conclusions. Tho argument m favor of Saturday half-li liday, briefly put, are; (1) The, benefit of a week-end spell to assistants": ' Probably 99 per cent, of assistants want the change, and those who do not,, hevor haVe :experienced' the , benefit. 1 (2) It means only ' one Wcokly '' breuk m business, '"' instead of two, thus ' making- for greater efficiefoey,. (_) It falls, ;, into line - " factories, ware- •* houses, " aiid "bank-, dtc./ ahd all' prbjgressiVo tbwns ahd cities m New -Zealand.
