At the Police Court Henry John Walters; a traveller for the Colombo Tea Co., of Dunedln. appeared m answer to <t charge -in respect to a shortage of £48 m Irs payments to the company. His counsel said the matter was more one of muddled accounts than theft. • Accused said that when, he .was dismissed there^ were three weeds' wagfs and some commission owing to him. and he had asked the couipany tg meet • him with an ;irrangenient for the repayment ;of short- | ages. He adinitUd that the company lnid met him twice before on shortages of this kind. Accused was convicted and admitted to probation for two years' on condition that tho amount owing above be returned from wages, to be repaid at ips. weekly.

He wished to do something for superannuated civil servants th's session, but was, not able to tell them yet what It would be. As a matter of fact he was waiting for the end of the second financial quarter, at I th& end of this month, to see what he was m a position to suggest. Anything he did would commence with the lowestpaid men and women, for they were the ones most urgently m need of assistance. He would commence with the lowest-paid i and ro as high as he could. Anything' he asked Parliament lo do would depend upon the state of public accounts at the end of this month, and it would not be permanent, but for as long as the increased cost of living continued, and as long as the finances nf the country could stand It. parliament would, be asked to assist,to the best of its ability those suffering hardship.
