SUGAR-WORKERS' STRIKE.

REINSTATEMENT DEADLOCK, j AUCKLAND, last night. ' Yesterday morning the atmosphere in the sugar workers' dispute seemed to be clearing and the new vista -heldi promises of better tilings, but the phase changed rapidly and this morning the union's representatives are by^ no meaii3 aanguine of a. settlement in/ the near ,'futifre. * This tinfortunate position is attributed by the iinion to. the attitude of the "company in respect to the reinstatement question-. Yesterday afternoon a very short interview indeed vus sufficient to dash the hopes' of a deputation comprising the secretary of the union (J. I'iirtell) and the •-chairman of the Transport Workers' Advisory Board, (G. Davis) that waited on.. .the mamager. of the Chelsea work« (A. V. Campbell) with a, request that he should state hia objection to re-qngaging certain members of the uniom to Mr Justioo "Stringer ■ and leave it to His Honor to decidb whether the -company had good and sufficient grounds for declining to reinstate these men. The manager was against the proposal, and explained that no matter what his own inclinations in the matter might he he had to consider the legal aspect. The umion secretary very much regrets the attitude of the manager in the matter, and suggests, as an alternative "with a view to, settling the point of difference, that the; required explanation be given to aii ihdepend'ent tribunal. Union members insist that the. point be settled, and openly state that no settlement can be achieved without it. Consequently it comes as no surprise to those acquainted with the feelings of the men that the, .- reinstateI ment"' problem is to be disoussed' at a special meeting of the retuwied soldiers' section of the union and the' union as a whole. The returned soldiers meet to-- ■ night and the imio» on .Siuiday— Press | Assn.
