FIRE AT WOOL WORKS.
■ ■ ■ o ,•_ £20,000 DAMAGE CAUSED. ■■' CHBISTCHURCH, this day. Damage to the extent of £20,000 was caused by a .fire which, at an, early hour of the morning, consumed the wool-scour-nig works of Walter Hill, at Woolston. Valuable scouring, tanning, and fellmongery machinery, which cannot be replaced within eighteen months, was destroyed. The' loss also included 500 bales of wool, valued at £20 per bale. The outbuildings ' w.as saved, but the principal works were practically burnt to the ground. Some seventy men aro thrown out of work. . The plant, buildings and sf «ck were insured with the Commercial Union Insurance Co. office for £9770, covering about half Mr Hill's losses. In addition there was some £30,000 worth of Government stock in the store, the insurance on which is not available.— Press Assn.
