BRITISH SILK INDUSTRY THREATENED.

LONDON,. July 7.— Prohibition of the importation of British manufactured silks into France— due to the operation of a French, Government decree— is inflicting great hardship on workers engaged m tbe industry m this country. Silk mills 'iu Great Yarmouth, Norwich, Braintree, Halstead and Erome are working short lime or have closed entirelyi and over 1300 workers, including many ex-soldiers, have been thrown idle. Italy and Belgium have already secured concessions from France, and representatidns have been piaae to the British Board of Trade, but so ,far without effect. Mourning crape is the only English silk fabric imported into France, and the industry is so serjously affected by the orohibition that it is faced not merely with a temporary stoppage, but with • extinction un-

less concessions are granted soon. .Several members' of Parliament have interested themselves m the subject, and notice has' been given of a number of questions to be asked m the House of Commons.
