LANTERN OF THE DEAD.
GRAND FRENCH MONUMENT. LONDON, August 17.— The Times correspondent at Paris states that, arrangements are m pi-ogress for the erection of a ?rand monument to the Allied dead at Lorctto ArtDis, where thousands of Frenchmen, British and Australasians laid down their lives, The spot selected is a notable hill-top, visible for miles. TheY plans arc being designed by M. Cordotinlcr, a member of the institute. The monument will be a domed basilica- resembling tile Pantheon, with two wings attached, m which the remains of the honored dead will he entombed. The building will be approached by a handsome avenue, girded a-lth verdant lawns. It will have a graceful bellry tower overtopping the dome, m which will shine the lantern of the dead; visible at Doual, Lille, llazebrouck xnd Casse.- •. ' Marshal l-'ocli, the French President, and other influential men, are taking vie keenest interest iv ihe' work. The -Luildliijr will not be ready for some time, but a religious and patriotic •eremqny will be conducted by Cardinal \mette on September 12th, to which all the survivors of the Battle of Lorettc will be InvitedvV
