The firm of Edmonds, Ltd., was charged m Christchurch with having sold baking powder bearing a misleading statement embossed on- a package, with an egg-shaped impression, bearing the word M Egg,'-' implying the presence of an egg equivalent. Counsel for the -Health Department stated that, under the regulations of September 25, Isl7, this was not an offence so long as it was stated on the package that the contents did not contain any nutritive properties of egg, but it was found that such, information was printed m a place where it could not be .seen until after a purchase was made, so it was decided to prohibit the use of the word, "egg." Counsel for defendants formally pleaded guilty; He said the Department had objected to the use of the "Egg" label, and tlie firm, had destroyed" 149.000 labels- and dies for them. The embossing of the lids of the 'firm's tins wa? also discontinued. His explanation ' of the offence was that some embossed "Egg" lids became mixed /with new ones. There was no attempt to defeat the law. The magistrate said evidently a mistake had been made. Defendants, were fined. £1 and 'costs.
