LONDON, August "24 The War Office reports that m Mesopotamia the situation has improved. The areas north-east of Bagdad' are quiet. A strong body of tribesmen • made several attacks on a party of Sikhs covering blockhouse construction south of Hillah. The attackers were beaten off with heavy losses. Our casualties were forty. Papers discovered on a Bolshevik etaff officer captured near Menzil disclosed a comprehensive scheme for the overrunning of Persia and capturing Teheran. — Reuter.
Official advices from Jerusalem statr that since the French occupation of Damascus the principal sheiks m the territory east of the Jordan had communicated with Sir H. Samuel requesting British occunatiou of the country. Sir H. Samuel informed a representative gathering nf the Arabs that the French Government had given renewed assurances they had no wish to interfere m affairs in -eastern Jordan. — A. and N.Z.C.A.
