HURRICANE AT HICKS BAY.

DAMAGE TO FREEZING WORKS.

j A fierce hurricane lasting for over an hour was experienced very early this morning at Hicks Bay. Considerable damage was caused to construction worts m connection with the Hicks' Bay freezing works, the freezing block being razed to the ground, according to advice received m Gisborne th's morning.

Mr. C. J. McCarthy, consulting engineer to the company, left by car this morning for Hicks Bay to assess the damage. , Further advice concerning the Hurricane states that trees were uprooted and damage was done to the postmaster's residence (Mr. McMeekin). The freezing block had three of the walls completed ready for placing on of the roof; the western end of the building was open, ana the open end faced the hurricane, wnicn razed the structure to the ground. This' will mean at least two or three months' delay m connection with the completion of th's block alone. Other portions received slight damage. The velocity or the hurricane was reported to be the highest experienced m that locality for many years past.
