'At-^east eight persons •'have been killed and 70 sent to hospital, though the death roll and casualty list are still incomplete. Disorders continually broke out. m new quarters. Several priests pluckily invaded the danger zone and implored the rioters to go home. This, however, had no effect. WJien the police were badly storied they made baton, charges, but finally soldiers, wearing steel helmets m. an armored car, with a Lewis gun, wore called out. and after repeated warnings, fired over the heads of the crowd. The mob fled, but returned to the attack when it was found" that no one was hurt. Tlie warnings Arere renewed anil the soldiers then fired into Uic crowd. Protestant and Catholic shojw suffered equally m. the' looting, which was a serious part of tho rioting. Young hooligans swaggered about with whisky bottles m their pockets, and rrirls were flaunting finery from looted shops. The' streets also were littered with broken goods.— A. and N.Z.C.A.
