July 21. At 1.10 both yachts changed to the port tack and hauled towards the Jez--< se y shore. Resolute footing faster at 1.40 was three-eighths of a mile ahead, but at 1.58 had dropped to tfro hundred yards. The wind was six knots'. The yachts iwere close inshore and made a pretty thrash to windward, heeling over m the strengthening wind, Shamrock's ilat bow ppunding the rolling sea. At 2.16 Resolute was leading a quarter of a f mile, and at 2.45 by threeeighths. The wind iincreased to ten knots, Resolute gaining slightly at every tuck. With the wind at seven to eight knots she reached the mark at 3hr. 21min. 21sec, and Shamrock at 3hr. 23min. 6sec. . .At 3.55 Resolute was half a mile ahead and ton miles from the finish.
