Tho ordinary competition m the senior sratle under the auspices of the P.B Rugby Union having concluded, the first two of a scries of matches with certain t-eams combined were played on the Reserve on Saturday afternoon before fl good attendance of spectators. There was a cold south-westerly wind-blowinfr which was more pleasing to the. players than to the -spectators, which included- «'i large number of ladies. On the No. 1 ground United was matched against a team representing Mangapapa. And Hum Clubs, and after a good game defeated the latier by r» points to 3..:. On th other ground High- School -met *h OK' Boys-Y.M.P. team, and -a splendid-spec-tacular game resulted m a win for the latter fry 17 points to 3. The former team did not play as well as when they met United a fortnight, previously, though the game was open and fast from si art to finish, the whites played with unusually good combination, and Devery was instrumental oh almost evexy occasion m preventing the ball getting ouf io ihe backs from the scrums. The superiority m weight was, m favor of the white forwards, but the -school ream tackled wiih precision and put up a. plucky defence. The whites kicked oft with the sun ar iheir backs and immediately assumed the offensive/ the incidents m the course 0.-the open play- be ing m such quick succession as to al most, baffle detailed description. Within eight minutes from the. kick-off a penalty for off side gave Leckie (O.B.) the clianc< at goal, which he accomplished with t splendid Icick. Whites 3, Blacks nil. Some smart work by the school team; m which Hampton. Bull, Hansen, and Pew figured prominently, carried play to "th* oilier end of the field, but H. Langlands (O.B.) created an opening, and a passing rush ensued, m the course of which thc ball passed through the hands of iMcDonald, Scott, Devery* H. Langlands. Keiha, Winter, then back to Scott, whc. carried it right up to the goal line, ana then centred it, and a force by Hansen relieved. . School assumed the offensive, iniiiated by Carson and Maude', and the whites' backs experienced a busy iimt for a few minutes, until. Devery- secured passed to 11. Langlands, whence it passed into the hands of the backs; who return ed play to midficld. Again the school team attacked, but W. Langlands (0.8.' saved by a good line kick. From the lineout McDonald (Y,M.P.) caught the ball and made a brilliant short run and passed to Devery, who passed ; to Scott, and the ball returned to Deverv, whc scored m the corner. The kick by Scoti failed, old Boys o, School nil. rretty play followed, until half-time wa s called but no further score was recorded. Shortly after play resumed Bull (High School) suffered slight injury to hia shoulder, and. retired from play for a time but later resumed. School .assumed the offensive, and Hampton aiid Pere carried play to Old Boys' twenty-five line, when Humphreys (O.b:) pjqked the ball off the ground. while running, and centred, it with a kick, thus placing ;U m the hands of the backs. \\fl)o presort into dangerous proximity to tluj school goal line, but. Old Boys then pressed, and Deverv, Scott, jl Langlands. and McDonald made'a'passing rush, there being a force out on the corner. Langlands (O.B.) secured, and ran three-quarters of the entire length of the field,: passing numerous opponents, and then centring with a kick, when liis brother (H. Langlands), while vunning swiftly, picked the ball off the ground and scored m a good position. Hundleby converted the try Old Boys 1/,, School nil. Although no fur-' ther scores were recorded the "play was fast, and exciting right up to the. call of time. Mr. J. H. Reidy was referee.
UNITED (5), v. MANGAPAPA-HUI.\ (3). '■ This game Avas more of a strenuous character than brilliant. The' match at' times was more m the nature of a scramble. A passing rush resulted m McGerty scoring m the corner and Har-, yis converted. The play uniil almost half-time was anything but interesting Mangapapa attacked, led by Rigby The ball went over the lino, and the wing set after it, but was interfered with by a United player, and the referee awarded an obstruction try. .The kick at goal failed, and the score at half-time was 5 points to 3. . ... The second part of the game was of an equal nature, tho play being first one end of the field and then the other. Both sides conducted a scries of attacks and counter-attacks ,m order to augment points, but without success. Mr. w. R. Burge was referee. In the junior grade, the Possible reps, drew with the Probable reps., the score being U points all. Mr. F. Poswillo was referee. .... Kaiti-City defeated Y.J^P. . by ' 18 points to fl. Mr. J. Corhett was referee.
The match between High School ana Mangapapa (third grade) resulted m a win for thc former by 21 points to; 3. For the winners , Rangi made' five tries, while Richardson and Sutcliffe made a try . each. For the losing team Wood scored. Tlie Mangapapa team played with only eleven men. Mr. p. Walton was referee.
TE AUTE v., HIGH SCHOOL,' '" , Considerable Interest is being manifested m thc collegiate match 'to be played on Friday afiernobn between thje Te Ante College team and the Gi9borne High School team, which has been.providing such spectacular football lately m Gisborne. The Te Auto team will arrive here by the steamer on Friday morning, and will play the match m the afternoon . The present arrangement is that the visitors will return south by the Arahura . at night, : but en endeavor is being made to arrange for .the lads to stay longer m Gisborne as the guests oi the local team.
