GISBORNE STUDY AND DISCUSSION SOCIETY.

» ■ ■. iFor a long time many people have felt Lhe need for some ' association providing i free platform for the discussion of subjects that matter most. This need is met by the . formation of the abovo society, Which has for its object the discussion of all important subjects yet keeping clear bho main purpose, the consideration of 3ocial and, religious questions. In this tho society differs from the ordinary debating society, which usually r.igidly banns all religious and political discussion. The members of this recently-formed society Feel that these subjects are the very ones bhat will yield most helpful • results, if discussed, not for the mere sake of discussion itself, but m order to clear one's own vision of what life demands from each of us as individuals and citizejis. One of the rules passed at the meeting Df formation, held on Thursday last, is ns follows: "That the. association shall exorcise no politicnl or religious party Functions, but shall remain strictly neutral towards any organisation which has L for its bbejet tho propagation of any political, philosophical, or religious creed." Yet tho society will provide a free platform For all mdicnl subjects, while refusing to identify itself with any particular point af view. The aim is to provide a society wherein men will have an opportunity of stepping aside from their daily concerns Lo discuss those questions that lie below the surface of life. The meetings will bb hold on Thursday evenings at 7.45; m rooms kindly lent by tho Theosophical Society. A syllabus committee is at work arranging '''a programme, and the first meeting will be published m tho local press. All "interested are urged to join, giving their" names' 'to "Mr Moffatt (aecreLarv), or Mr Wainwright (president).
