£30,000,000 FOR ROAD REPAIRS
I I* — - -— ■ LONDON, Feb. 20.— Roads m different ports of the country are undergoing extensive repairs, and m many cases traffic ia compelled -to' make detours to reach its destination, while' the list of obstructions- on various routes is a- lengthy one. These difficulties are an aftermath of tho , war, and are' ■ duo to the energetic measures which the highway authorities arc taking to restore the roads to their former excellent condition — a task which, .as long ago as January 1917, was estimated to cost £30,000,000 for a milea%o of 1500 m and Wales alone. contributions .towards the vast expenditure necessary amount to £10,300,000, including a balance of £2,000,Q00 m the hands of the Road Board . when • the latter was transferred to the Ministry of Transport. During the current year the amounts i estimated to be expended on eight arterial . roads from London is over £600,000 ; m . London itself, the.repaying and rosurfac- ■ ing of streets is costing over a million and j a quarter, while work m the Home Counties is estimated at £1,239,000.
