In view of the comments that only Senegalese soldiers and some of the crew Avere saved from the wreck of the Afrique, enquiry has , elicited that the crew did everything possible, the stokers remaining at their posts till the vessel struck the rocks. There was' no panic. The passengers hesitated to take their places iii the boats owing to the riiountsunous seas. It is -stated • that-' o\ving to the pumps becoming choked with cinders what might have been .a mere . accident became a disaster. i
