The ex-Kaiser disclosed his re«l char-, acter and sinister share m plotting at Potsdam on the eve of the war by em- ; bittered contemptuous attitude towards ' England m a remarkable series of autograph memoranda and annotations on official correspomlCTice discovered m Berlin as a result of •Ka.uti.ky'a- investigations. The documents show Mat Germany began preparations for war on July 6th. ■ The ex-Kaiser invited Austria, m the strongest terms to attack and crush Serbia. He plotted to throw en Russia the od^um of the eventual wider conflict. ! Sir Edward Grey's mild preliminary intervention met with immediate resentment. The ex-Kaiser wrote Von Jagow, stating that Grey must be. told piaimly j "I won't stand any nonsense." 1 Following the fa.ilure of Germany's bid to secure Britain's neutrality, whereim the Chancellor hinted at the possibil, ity of a later naval, agreement. Count Licbnowsky reported ■ that Sir Edward Grey regarded the situation as mcreasingly serious. The ex-Kaiser commented : "Tt is the higo-esi. plfre of English Pharisaism I have ever seen. With such scoundrels I'll never conclude a naval agreement. Grey is an arch -base deceiver and Mephistophelean, bind truly Entl'sh." ' Learning that Britain miv»bt be unab'e f,o stand aside, the ex-Kaiser's fury was unbounded. He described the British as a pick of husVstevs. "Grey is trying to separate Germany amd Austria. He could keep France and Russia qu^et if he cared to. send a single sharp word tp Paris ai)d St.. Petersburg. He threatens us instead — the low hound. The responsibility for peace or war snow tests with England alone." In a- later memoranda the bitterly wrote: "Edward the Seventh is dead, but he is still stronger ihan I who am alive."
