TOWN EDITION.

Mr Wm. Wendy was admitted to the hospital this afternoon from Arowhatla, suffering from a crushed toe. Included in the draft of returned : soldiers who arrived at Gisbome yesterday was Gunner E. L. Akroyd, of the 40th Reinforcements. We have received a letter from a Te Karaka resident criticising a local charitable movement. The questions asked should be referred to the gentlemen who are dealing with the matter. Obviously it is not a proper subject for newspaper, controversy. : ■/.' ' ; At the Police Court, Wairoa, W. Gibb was fined £2 i*nd costs £2 7s for being drunk whilst in charge of a coach and five horses. Sergeant Quinn stated that tho police had prevented the man t,oing on and had placed the coach in chaise of another driver* •Mr. P, D-. Stewart, travelling representative for Messrs. Ross and Glendining's Napier branch for 15 years, who has been promoted to the charge of the Gisborne branch, was heartily fare welled on Monday night by his fellow members of the Wairere Bowling Club. Following is the summary of the slipe and scoured wools submitted for valuation! by Government scourers and fellmongers for the year ending June 30, the slipe wool figures given in parenthesis : Napier, M. F. Bourke, 3018 (1605) ; Butcher Bros., Ltd., 2724 (986) ; A. Weaver, 2480; Illingworth and Hellyer, 1041; R. Tucker, 2237; Woods' Proprietary, Ltd,, 1519; totals, 13,019 (2591). Gisborne: East Coast Fellmongers, Ud., 2981 (710): W. H/ Smith, 1748; totals, 4729 (710). The Hawke's Bay hockey team arrived from Napier by the Arahura this morning, after a splendid trip. Owing to tidal conditions preventing the Tuatea i tendering the Arahura on her arrival, the P.B. Hockey Association made special arrangements for the teams to be landed by the Harbor Board's launch. This afternoon the ladies' Hawke's Bay team played Poverty Bay team as a curtain raiser to the gentlemen's match. The weather, was beautiful, and there was a large attendance of spectators. Both matches were, of an interesting nature. The late Mr James Powell, under whose will bequests totalling £24,500 have been made to various public, religious, * and charitable institutions throughout New Zealand, was born in Liverpool 83 years ago. As a lad he went to America, where he stayed for some time, and then returned to England. In 1860 he arrived in Dunedin and found his way to the Dunstan mining fields. After meeting with varying successes he returned to Dunedin, where he served in a store. His outside interests embraced volunteering and the Presbyterian Church. iFrom Dunedin he went to Hokitika, where he was in business for some time. Later he came to Westport and carrier on business as a storekeeper until about 10 years ago, when he retired into private life. He was the first captain of the Westport Fire Brigade; he served on the Borough Council, Harbor Board, and Education Board, and, with Mr Bailie, who survives him, took the initiatory steps to- ! wards establishing the hospital in West- [ port. It is understood that he was the first Justice of the Peace in Westport. i He was a man of genial disposition, ' with a broad outlook, and was fond of I travelling, his trips including . several to the Old Country and to the Pacific Islands^ He was twice married, and is survived by his second wife, but no family. The inward passengers by the Arahura to-day from Napier had a long wait in the roadstead, and experienced the serious disabilities of the port. Tho. vessel anchored at 10.30 a.m., aud the lighters were towed out about that j hour by a launch to the mouth of the river, where they were picked up by; the Karoro waiting in the roadstead and taken over to the Arahura, in order to facilitate working the cargo. The tender Tuatea cannot work at less than four feet showing ou the gauge and this morning when the Arahura anchored there was only about two feet, with the tide rapidly running out. There were two hockey teams aboard for the tournament here', and as the weather was favourable in the roadstead the Harbor Board launch brought them ashore in two trips. The break at the entrance of the river, however, ' necessitated the launch going to the western side of the groyne on tbe Waikanae beach. The hockeyites were disembarked at this point and had to walk up the groyne. The launch then entered the river .•empty, but owing to the swell bumped on the shoal ground. She waited for more water before the second trjp and the teams were landed in time for the match this afternoon. Had there been any more swell the matter could not have been managed. It is hoped to get out with the Tuatea ahout 4 p.m. for the inward passengers, and the last launch has been fixed for 7 p.m. at high water. With any rough weather there will be apparent tho serious delay and inconvenience, as well as risk, in working the port in its present shoaled condition, especially at the entrance. Members of the Girls' Emergency Club are notified of an important meeting to be held at the club rooms to-mor-row evening.
