GIFT TO SOLDIERS.

FULFILLING' A PROMISE. ] (per Press Associatio*h.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. i A gratifying instance of a promise made and scrupulously fulfilled was be- ] fore the Land Board to-day. The appli- : cation was a routine one-r-appjication to ' transfer the interest in a grazing run in the Mount Peel district to three discharged soldiers. The details, however, iwere out of the ordinary. It was explained, in support of the application, : that \vhen six young men of the district enlisted, the lessee of the run promised them the goodwill of it •when they returned. Off the six, three have "gone West," and the other three have returned. The lessee^ therefore, hi accordance with his promise, applied to the Board to approve the transfer of the lessee's interests in the run, which amounts to JESBOOO,. ami the net annual profits from it close upon £2000. The transfer of the gift of the goodwill is subject to stamp duty amounting to over £100, the .cheque for which was forwarded. , The solicitor for the lessee suggested that, as tbe State was being relieved of its liability to three soldiers, it might remit the stamp duty. • .The transfer was »approv.ed, , and it was agreed to recommend the Minister of Lands -to -arrange for the remission of the stamp duty. „
