NEW ZEALANDERS IN EGYPT.
TASK OF KEEPING ORDER,
An interesting sidelight on the work of New Zealanders m Egypt is given m an extract from a letter, dated May 21 received from Brigadier-General Meldrum, who is m command of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles m Egypt and Palestine. The waiter says: — "I do not yet knew for certain when I shall get away from here; but have hopes of getting away very soon, within the next three weeks at any rate. I have been keeping fairly fit, and the work we have been having Jately is new and keeps us interested. I have command over a province named Ghafbiah, which is about the size of the Auckland proyuice with Taranaki and Bawke's Bay thrown m, and have headquarters at iauta/the chief town m it, which contains , about . 100,000 inhabitants. My job. is; to keep order, and I have two battalions of infantry and two regiments of mounted troops, etc, -under me. So far it has not been hard work. But it is very interesting moving round the country, interviewing local celebrities and^ making speeches- to Oudahs, the heads of the villages, and so on All the same we are all very anxious to get away^home again. It is over four and a half years now since we left New Zealand, and much as we want to help to straighten things out here, we will be very pleased to , receive ouAmarchmg orders for home." ,
