AMERICA SCORES.
LARGE SHARE OF GERMAN SHIPS
MAKES HER GLOAT.
NEW YORK, May 6.— The World's Washington corresikmdent says: "The United States have been awarded by the Supreme War, Council at Paris aj^the German, vessels seized at American ports, compmiaijg 41. passenger and freight ships and '4B cargo ships, in return for whioh America pays £20,000,---000, which Germany owes to the United States,"
The World adds ; "This acquisition will advance America 10 years towards the world's shipping supremacy, and it is not unlikely that one early result Avill be to place this country in the lead of any other country in the Trans-Atlantic passenger service. ' Tin*) present programme of the Shipping Board -will give the United States in a Very few years one-third of the world's entire shipping tonnage. Thp acquisition of the German vessels is regarded as a wonderful help towards attaining the eqal sought. The large passenger ships are' consider-. e ~ 0l * . t, ' le -gi-'©a.test yahip because their effect is to cause wealthy shippers who travel in these vessels to send their cargoes over the same lines," The World suggests that the German ships will be operated by the American iGovernment, and not be sold to private interests. It is pointed out, however, m various quarters that the higher cost of operating American ships may. be such as to make the vessels unprofitable to the United States, and their sale abroad may occur at some time in the future.
