Dorden asked Soheidemanji for permission to elect a Rhenish Assembly and. permit 'the despatch of a representative to the Peace Conference. Scheidemann's reply was the initia-; tion of proceedings against Dorden and his Government for high treason. Dorden telegraphed to the British commandant at Cologne tasking that the Peace Conference should recognise the new republic, which was estabush^a by popular yot«e.
