GREATLY OUTNUMBERED BY WELL EQUIPPED ARMY.
SIR, ERNEST SHACKLETO'N'S REPORT.
'Renter's Telearam.) (Received April 7, 8.30 a. m.) { LONDON, April 3. Sir Ernest Shackleton has returned from Murmansk to Archangel. Interviewed by a Reuter correspondent, he said the position of the Allied northern forces is undoubtedly an anxious oiie. The Bolshevists are well-equipped and organised, and ably led. They largely outnumbered the Allies, hence both the Murmansk and Archangel fronts were m danger. , . It waß not merely a question of saving our own troops, for half a million people threw m their lot with us, being originally # against the Germans and at present against the Bolshevists. Consequently there was a moral obligation to take definite action. An announcement thereanent would be a spearpoint thrust m the heart of Bolshevism and an incentive to Russian mobilisation. Sir Ernest Shackleton was *** confident that, sufficient volunteers could be obtained to meet the situation. He urged that Britain had not yet realised what was at stake if the peril was not instantly grappled with. A three months' campaign by a volunteer army would break the Bolshevist monster, which was becoming far worse than German militarism. ; ' . VANCOUVER, April 5. The Bolshevists devastated the town of Osca, near Perm, killing 2000, includ-| ing the educated classes.
