Before the Epidemic Commission Mr. Vernon Reed;, M.P., suggested that when aii outbreak of disease Occurred in other parts of the world an expert sboiild be sent from New Zealand to get first-hand information; also there should bo a permanent official organisation set up by the Health Department, with power to control other departments and get immediate organisation with representatives in outlying districts. Mr. Haynes, Chief- Sanitary Inspector, gave, figures relating to the progress of the epidemic from the first death on the Niagara oh Octobeil 11th, the greatest number in one d^y being fiftysix in November. Be said £here were no plum- areas -in! Auckland. The municipal area localities jn whiph the disease Recurred shqwed , that-.. its lyjrileqce had no connection -yv-ith,- sanitary, or insanitary conditons. He suggested that! the hocal authority should be given more control in public health matters.
