(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. At the epidemic commission, Dr. Bennett gave evidence -of influenza at the Garrison Port at Devonport. When the hospital ward was ctpened on ( October 7th there were 29 cases, two of which showed pneumonic symptoms. , Dr. Dwyer stated that before the Niagara arrived, he encountered a number of cases, tho first being m May. Ho could now positively identify these as of the epidemic type. He was always opposed to the' use of the term influenza. He preferred to call the disease epidemic pneumonia. No one really knew what the disease was. It was not true pneumonia, hut was brought about by a failing heart. Dr. Horton said tbat 65 per cent, 'of the papulation was affected' hy the epidemic. The term "influenza" was quite inaccurate. From post mortems he considered it a form of general blood poisoning. On August 12 he saw a case which resulted fatally. ' __«_________________•
