SOCIETY OF NATIONS.
It is announced that Lord Robert Cecil, representing the British Government, is ready to present quite definitely tihe British view of a "Society" of Nations (says the San Francisco Chronicle). It is interesting tq jiote the substitution of tfhe termi "society" for iUeague." It is morally certain that thfere is real significance m the change pf nairie.. t . And,, qne, cannot.. but confess that' the new name h more -enticing. * X #ie term "society' '.fo adopted, instead of league, it will mean* a good deal. "It sjaVors much less of central coercion, Against which it would "be foUy to deny there is growing up increasing . opposition, and a greater desire for local selfgovernment. An international league has come to suggest, the. is?a of an organisation with strprig. ' 'pavvjerg of coercion. A society suVgests' "only 'an association for friendly intercourse, like a ladies' sewing society, for example, at which ,there is mudt pleasant talk andt some :U§eful wprk turned ! but as an incident. Let '» us, by all means, have a Society of Nations. ■
